Letter to Jack

On Sunday, we had a lovely infant dedication service at Common Table. It was so good to celebrate the birth of the most recent CT babies, and welcome them into our community. (The icing on the cake - I'm pretty sure Jack gained an unanticipated but fully welcomed God-sister!). Aaron and I wrote a letter for Jack, and read it during the service. Here it is:

2 December 2012

Jack,

We want you to know that we love you, wholly and completely.
You never have to impress us with your accomplishments, and we do not expect that you will always be angelically good. We just love you, no matter what. We always will.

When we pray for you, we do not ask God to make you a genius, a millionaire, or world's best musician. We want you to be your own person – to be who you were created to be. We want you to live whatever life God calls you to.

Our prayer for you is simply Love. We pray that you know and love your Creator, and that you never cease to be amazed by His love for you. As your parents, we promise to teach you everything we know about our loving God.

We pray that you learn to love others, without prejudice, and with every fiber of your being. Be brave, reveal yourself candidly, and embrace others without hesitation. We commit to model daily this love we so hope you to act upon. Our family will be built on kindness and respect, our home will serve as a comfort to your community, and there will always be room for another of your friends at our table.

We pray that you love the earth. Treat it respectfully, and remember that it does not belong more to one person than another. We will actively demonstrate for you good stewardship of the earth and its resources.

We pray that you pour yourself lovingly into whatever you set out to do. Do your best to accomplish your task, and do not be afraid to get messy. We will support your dreams, and do whatever we can to assist you in achieving them.

Live boldly. Love casts out fear. When you understanding the depths of God's love, you have no reason to fear anything. And when things get difficult, and when you grow weary, know that we will always be there to comfort you and lift you up.

That's all! Happy December!
